This particular thistle was photographed in an untouched field one summer day in South Carolina. Okay, technically, it's an invasive weed here ... but those spiky, symmetrical, skyward-pointing flowers are still irresistible! The depth of field in the photo gives that melting watercolor background that sets off the crispness of the singular bloom.
