About the Design

Best-selling retro, grungy red, punk plaid. Hand-drawn line art © Su Schaefer 2015

'Grunge the Lumberjack, red, by Su_G' (https://www.spoonflower.com/fabric/4535787): Bestselling Lumberjack design, after grunge. Channeling the grimy flannel, 'smelly-caveman', 'ratty rec-room', 'Seattle chic' grunge look. Hand-drawn line art © Su Schaefer 2015 ~ with thanks to Sean Conaty for his excellent plaidmaker software (https://plaidmaker.com). See more grunge designs by Su_G - none of which is quite as grungy as this. (https://www.spoonflower.com/profiles/su_g?shop_selection=tag&tag=grunge) This was my entry in Spoonflower's '90s Nostalgia Contest'. So so happy that it placed 13th out of 185 total entries (with 192 validated votes): THANK YOU to everyone who faved/ voted/ commented: truly made my day! A classic red, black and white flannel plaid with grimy textural overlays, channeling the grunge look of the early 1990s, described by Rick Marin in a NY Times piece in 1992 as: “the smelly-caveman look”, “ratty rec-room chic”, with “the boho-hobo staples of second-hand attire” including “ripped jeans, untucked flannel and stomping boots”. The components of the look were cheap, durable and timeless – rather than chosen for their high fashion statements. "It wasn't like somebody said, 'Let's all dress like lumberjacks and start Seattle chic!' " according to Jonathon Poneman (a founder of Sub Pop - credited with inventing ‘grunge’). “Grunge: A Success Story” by Rick Marin, published November 15, 1992 in the New York Times. (http://www.nytimes.com/1992/11/15/style/grunge-a-success-story.html) Printed beautifully on basic cotton as shown in the thumbnail (double click for a clearer view). Buddha Babe (https://www.mybuddhababe.com) made the dapper 'Grungerjack' (Tina's word!!) luxe leggings, bibs and other great stuff for babes. Have to say I love it - everything looks so smart, as you can see at Buddha Babe Products (https://www.mybuddhababe.com) and their fabulous Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/buddhabibs/). Raeli Designs makes 'Grunge Plaid' leggings and headband in a thumbnail as well as scarves, bibs, beanies and other great stuff for babies and kids. Everything so stylish - see Raeli Designs (https://www.raelidesigns.com) and the fabulous Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/RAELIdesigns/) and Instagram @raeli_designs. Also impressed by these terrific tote bags created by SWish and so pleased to be able to share these pictures (courtesy of SWish).
