bamboo. Originating from Java, Indonesia.
This traditional dance, with the dancers straddling the bamboo horses, comes from the Javanese people of Indonesia, and was brought to Malaysia during a period of migration a long, long time ago. Known as 'Jaran Kepang' in Indonesia, there can be instances where the dancers are induced into a 'trance' by the presiding shaman. However in Malaysia, (more specifically in the Southern region), Kuda Kepang is only performed as a formality and as entertainment in ceremonies and cultural shows.
